07/06/2019 – A New Beginning

Today was my last day at work.

Having been in employment for 4 years, I thought that was quite enough.

Rather than being jobless and lazy, I refer to myself as a full time athlete. This gives no indication as to the quality of my performances but more to my attitude towards it. I have become a big believer in recovery and refuelling (napping and big meals).

My second job for the next few weeks is as a logistics and coordination consultant (planning my trip). I told myself that first of all I had to plan how I was going to plan… For this I leant on my best friend throughout my 4 years of work, Microsoft Excel (other spreadsheet based applications are available).

Before I get any further into this, I should probably tell you what I plan to do in this belated gap year. As it stands, at some point in July, I will be setting off with a tent, sleeping bag and food strapped to my road bike heading east, eventually getting back to where I started. This is more commonly known as an ‘around the world cycle’.

As much as my competitive side would like to go for some kind of record for this, that’s not why I’m doing it. I love cycling and feel it gives an incomparable feeling of freedom. It will give me an unbelievable opportunity to see the world and experience everything it has to offer. The ability to wake up each morning without an alarm in the middle of a completely different culture with the world at my feet (wheels) is something I’ve daydreamed about for quite a while.

Before you ask, yes, my mum has given me the green light on this.

The first (and most fun) thing for me to start planning is the route so that is what I will crack on with first. Other things to follow will be the kit that I need, how I will cope with camping and fending for myself and other boring things such as VISAs.
